Editorial﹕Professional exchanges must transcend politics
文章日期:2018年8月31日

【明報專訊】THE Law School of Peking University and the Hong Kong Bar Association had collaborated on a common law course, but last May two members of the Bar Association were barred from teaching the course, which was to have taken place at Peking University. Philip Dykes, chairman of the Bar Association, received a message that he should not attend the course's closing ceremony. What has happened? Peking University has not provided any detailed explanations for its decision and the Bar Association has decided to suspend the course. The collaboration was a professional exchange. It will be unfortunate if that has happened because there were other considerations at play. In fact, it should not have happened. The systems of mainland China and Hong Kong are different in nature. "One country, two systems" was implemented to tackle the differences between the two systems and to enable both to coexist in one country. We hope that Peking University will continue to be open-minded, ensure that professional matters are handled professionally and bring the course arrangements back to normal for the benefits of students and prevention of more mistrust between the mainland and Hong Kong.
