Editorial : Hong Kong independence will lead HK to a blind alley
文章日期:2018年8月16日

【明報專訊】ANDY Chan Ho-tin, convener of the Hong Kong National Party (HKNP), was invited to give a speech at the Foreign Correspondents' Club (FCC) and talk loftily about his advocacy of Hong Kong's independence. The SAR government and the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the HKSAR have issued statements separately to condemn the event. Hong Kong's independence is a denial of the "One country, two systems". It will ruin the relationship between the central government and Hong Kong and will only lead Hong Kong to a blind alley. The FCC stresses that it "supports free speech in Hong Kong and all parts of the world", saying that it does not intend to give a fillip for the independence movement. However, judging from the entirety of the speech, it did have the effect of providing a platform for the promotion of the independence movement, giving it a chance to be exalted to the international level. This is pushing Hong Kong into the whirlpool of the diplomatic rivalry between world powers. Looked at from the perspective of realpolitik, this will do Hong Kong all harm but no good.
