Editorial﹕MTR should not tell others to shut up
文章日期:2018年6月29日

【明報專訊】IN a statement published in newspapers in response to the problems with the construction of the Sha Tin-Central link, the MTR claims that "making unproven allegations and speculations" will not help to resolve the issue and can even "undermine public confidence in railway infrastructure projects". The statement has aroused concern about whether the MTR is aware of the crux of the problem and the worries of the public. At stake in the "shortened steel bars" saga is the safety of the platform structure, which is a serious matter. Had someone not blown the whistle and made the allegations, the government, the senior management of the MTR and society would still be kept in the dark. Public confidence has been undermined not because someone fabricated stories to "pick a quarrel and stir up trouble". It is instead a result of slack supervision on the part of the authorities concerned and the vague explanations given. The public is worried that the MTR is downplaying the hidden risks because it has too much faith in the one-sided explanations of the contractor.
