Editorial : Free public Wi-fi services far from satisfying
文章日期:2018年4月27日

【明報專訊】DESPITE the government's determination to build Hong Kong into a smart city, an Audit Commission report has found that free Wi-fi services provided by the government are not as satisfactory as expected. The connection at some of the hotspots was slow, the service usage low. The pilot project of providing Wi-fi services under public-private collaboration has also been ineffective. The overall picture is really a far cry from what an ideal smart city should be like. In recent years, large cities across the world have invariably sought to develop citywide free Wi-fi services. The SAR government has also worked on this for a decade, only to get the unsatisfactory results shown by the audit. The key to the problem lies not in any insufficiency of resource inputs, but in the government's bureaucracy and its failure to regard the public interest as the top priority.
