Editorial : Are doctors' interests more important than the public interest?

【明報專訊】ALVIN Chan Yee-shing, a paediatrician, has been found guilty of two counts of professional misconduct by the Medical Council for his improper treatment of a male infant's finger that led to gangrene and amputation. As a penalty, his license has been suspended for six months. It is true that the ruling, which eluded the infant's family for nine years, has come as a relief to their protracted pain. However, the case has reflected a practice of medical practitioners shielding one another. Given the present circumstances, one can hardly hope the ruling will bring any changes to it.
