A Journey Backwards : Disorienting the taste buds

【明報專訊】One can tell a lot about the joy of street food hunting in a city. About a decade ago, Shanghai at the crack of dawn had the most amazing array of snacks waiting to greet the working population of the city. From Xiaolongbao at 5RMB for a dozen to the heavenly egg pancakes at 2RMB each, Shanghai showcased the vitality common to many Asian cities. Today, street hawkers of different sorts display the simplest form of a self-sustained business, while signature dishes that every local person grew up with remain an important part of their lives. To me, nothing connects the past and the present as decently as good street food does.
