Write on... : Across the bridge over the River Kwai
文章日期:2016年8月24日

【明報專訊】One day in Tokyo I read a brief article about a former Japanese army intelligence officer who was trying to organise a trip of forgiveness to the River Kwai. He was seeking former prisoners of war (POW) to join him. The following day I was at office of The Japan Times asking the editor how I might go about meeting the man, Takashi Nagase (永瀨隆). He said there was no national support for Mr Nagase's adventure. "The past is the past, we must forget the war," he said. "But my father was there, and I'm looking for information about him," I blurted out. The man immediately became alert. "Ah, a human interest story," he exclaimed, and the following day I was on the Bullet Train travelling south towards Hiroshima.
