The City Wanderer : Don't be shaped by your job
文章日期:2015年8月25日

【明報專訊】In the article How Your Job Shapes Your Identity, Alain de Botton wittily discusses "the psychological requirements and consequences of one's job" - the mindsets and habits that we develop in our jobs, mostly without our knowledge. In this article, de Botton reveals that a dentist tends to think of human beings as evasive and weak, judging from the CEOs who experience no less fear than children when it comes to a dental appointment. These habits spill out into personal lives. A teacher can rarely hold back from giving a lecture at a private dinner. A writer has a natural thirst to facilitate communication by rephrasing things, as if nothing is ever articulated well enough. If left untamed, these tendencies can be quite detrimental (有害的). It won't take long before everyone avoids dining with the teacher and stops going to the uncaring dentist.
