Police-public relations not to be disregarded

【明報專訊】THE NEW POLICE COMMISSIONER came into office yesterday. As for his predecessor, Andy Tsang Wai-hung, he has recently been lambasted by social activists and radical politicians, who declare that he has done nothing good. Their comments are unfair and biased. For one thing, Hong Kong last year registered the lowest crime rate since 1997, and is today one of the safest cities in the world. It would not be convincing to say that Tsang has played no part whatsoever in this achievement. What is more, while the way the police handled the illegal Occupy movement is highly controversial, there were no serious casualties during the 79-day movement, which posed a serious threat to law and order, and which the government would not have been able to bring to an end without the help of the police led by Tsang. It would be wrong not to acknowledge Tsang's contributions in this respect.
