【明報專訊】On 24 December 1914, a usual day of fighting and killing in World War I, the Christmas spirit melted hearts on the battlefield in Belgium. As troops were resting, singing of Christmas carols was first heard from the German trenches, very soon British soldiers joined in. After a few moments, some German soldiers and Allied men emerged from their trenches, crossed the line and started shaking hands and exchanging gifts like buttons and cigarettes. There was even a friendly soccer game between the opposing sides.
