The Arts : Not from Zero

【明報專訊】Recently I was fortunate to attend a rehearsal by the Asian Youth Orchestra (亞洲青年管弦樂團) at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts concert hall. Some 110 young musicians were participating in rehearsals for their three-week Asian tour. These rehearsals will last for three weeks and the young musicians will be rehearsing for some nine hours a day. This gives you a sense of the level of commitment and focus required. What was so noticeable in the rehearsal, which was of Tchaikovsky's 5th symphony, was the level of passion and focus demonstrated by these young musicians. There was no sense of the players just sitting reading the notes, rather, there was a palpable sense of the music being "alive" and recreated for the moment.
