History-Festival﹕Hanukkah
文章日期:2011年12月8日

【明報專訊】The eight-day Jewish celebration known as Hanukkah (光明節) commemorates the rededication (重新奉獻) during the second century BC of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, where according to legend Jews rose up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt. Hanukkah, meaning "dedication (奉獻)" in Hebrew (希伯來語), begins on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar and usually falls in November or December. (In 2011, Hanukkah begins on December 20 and ends on December 28.) Often called the Festival of Lights, the holiday is celebrated with the lighting of the menorah (七燈或九燈燭台).
