文章日期:2011年11月3日

Four-month-old severely malnourished Somali baby boy is held by his mother at the only public hospital in the capital Mogadishu, Somalia, 25 September 2011. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said that Somalia has the highest mortality rate in the world for children under the age of five. The country's child mortality rate in 2010, prior to current famine, stood at 180 deaths per 1,000 live births, which is even getting worse with widespread famine and recurring drought. Six areas in southern Somalia have been declared famine zones by the United Nations and 750,000 people are at imminent risk of death while 1.5 million children need immediate assistance including 336,000 children under the age of five who are severely malnourished.
