My Gap Year Diary﹕Death Road 2
文章日期:2011年3月15日

【明報專訊】I really was not a big fan of cycling. I am especially put off it now after my experience on the Death Road, and by the buses in Oxford. This is why when anyone asks me why in the world I would dream of cycling down the world's most dangerous road, I have absolutely no clue except to say that I survived! I signed up for the 'trip' with a few friends at a company called 'Vertigo'. Only a few months beforehand, a young Israeli girl had been with this same company, lost her grip and had fallen off the cliff, making the news yet again. We were all undoubtedly nervous as we drove to the starting point of the Death Road. As we put on our helmets, suited up, checked brakes, shaking with fear, we began this unforgettable ride of a lifetime. The first part of the route was a wide steep road where we got accustomed to our bikes and checked if anything was wrong with them for safety reasons. Soon enough, we started the true part of the road we had been looking forward to/dreading. The atmosphere was suddenly eerie because of the fog, slight drizzle, much chillier air, muddy and rocky grounds. It was almost impossible to see. But for our bright orange jumpsuits, I would not have been able to spot the people in front of me. The road was not wide at all. In fact, our van could hardly fit on it, so I had no idea how buses or other cars could possibly drive along these deadly roads. Our group was sandwiched between two vans for safety and maintenance purposes. Three experienced leaders would help us out and made sure everything went smoothly, and filmed our ride. Dangerous, life-risking, exhilarating, thrilling, nerve- wrecking… none of these words could describe what I was about to see, and what could have been one of the last things I experienced!
