Now & Then﹕Child Adoption

【明報專訊】Lee Shau-kee (李兆基), the second richest tycoon in Hong Kong, has got a triplet of grandsons. The reason why the triplets (who may inherit the Lees' business empire) are special is that they were born of a surrogate mother whom the Lees had hired. Their single parent is Peter Lee Ka-kit (李家傑), Lee Shau-kee's eldest son. While the Lees are joyous, the surrogacy arrangement has aroused much controversy. The Catholic Church criticised the Lees for disrespecting human dignity.

Surrogacy is undoubtedly infertile couples' last resort. Yet, questions of ethics have arisen, and much has to be considered. Some therefore have adopted children. They have gained custody of children whose parents have died or given up their parenthood. Child adoption has become quite common among celebrities.
