Barry Kalb: Verb Tenses
文章日期:2010年11月3日

【明報專訊】My Chinese students at The University of Hong Kong have a difficult time figuring out English verb tenses, and I sympathize with them: the Chinese language does not use western-style tenses. In Chinese, you can "come back" any day of the week and the form of the verb remains the same: "I come back yesterday," "I come back today," "I come back tomorrow." The English versions of these sentences, however, require many different tenses: "I came back (past tense) yesterday," "I am coming back (progressive tense) today," "I will come back (future tense) tomorrow" – not to mention cases requiring the conditional tense and others.
