Writing Advice

【明報專訊】The structure of Erin's letter is excellent: it has a short, clear introductory sentence, it outlines the subject, it gives three clear suggestions and has another short concluding sentence. Use a clear, logical structure when writing formal letters. She also uses correct salutations-if you don't know the person's name, use "Yours faithfully" at the end. Using idioms and fixed phrases in formal letters is fine, but with all vocabulary items it's important to consider the usage as well as the form. An idiom such as "in the blink of an eye" is fine here, because it doesn't sound (unintentionally) funny or too informal. "Naughty little kids" sounds too informal, though.
