As you are writing to the editor of a newspaper, you could give the title of the article where you read about this "recent case", and the date or issue of the paper too. This would help the editor, who will publish two or three letters on the same topic on the letters page. You could do this in the "re" line-this is like the subject line of an email and comes above the "Dear" line and below the date of a formal letter. It might look like this:
